The Oakdale Express
Winter 2008
Former Teacher and Principal Passes

On November 4, 2007, Oakdale School lost an alumnus and a former teacher/ principal.  Sam
Hoskins, Class of 1963, passed away after battling oral cancer for more than four years.

Before beginning his teaching career, Mr. Hoskins was a commissioned officer in the U.S. Army
and served in Vietnam where he suffered severe wounds.  He taught at Oakdale during the
1971-72 school year and returned to Oakdale School for good at the beginning of the 1979-80
school year.

During his tenure at Oakdale School, Mr. Hoskins taught elementary classes, was over the Title 1
Reading Lab, served as assistant principal, and served as principal.  He was very involved in all
aspects of school life and was an excellent role model for students.  Mr. Hoskins had a wonderful
rapport with the faculty, the staff, and the student body.

He is survived by his wife Jeanette (a former Oakdale teacher), son and daughter-in-law John
and Sabrina, godson Dru Miller, and brother Dr. William Hoskins.

On January 17, 2008, Oakdale School honored the memory of its former principal by naming the
elementary gym the Sam Hoskins Gymnasium.  A plaque has been placed in the gym as a
permanent reminder of what Mr. Hoskins meant to Oakdale School and what Oakdale School
meant to him.

Mr. Hoskins will be missed by all who knew him.
